Dr. Brooke A. Burks has spent her entire life in and around schools. Born to a teacher father and nurse mother, Dr. Burks taught high school English for over a decade before joining the faculty at Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM). At AUM, Dr. Burks is a full professor, serving as Department Chair of Curriculum, Instruction, and Technology in the College of Education. She also recently served as the University’s interim Chief Diversity Officer.
Dr. Burks operates DocuBrooke, LLC, a copy-editing service, in which she has been engaged in producing publications such as the State of Black New Orleans: 10 Years Post-Katrina, published by the Urban League of Greater New Orleans. She has also published numerous research articles along with a work of fiction titled Tawanda’s Quest: A Novel.
Dr. Burks volunteers her time as Vice President of the board of directors for the Family Guidance Center of Alabama, as a voiceover artist for the Audio Information Network of Colorado, as a panelist and panel moderator for several entities in the River Region and beyond, and as President of the Alpha Xi Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated.
A native of Mobile, Alabama, Dr. Burks received her B.A. in Language Arts Education from Tuskegee University and both the M.Ed. in English Education and the Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from Auburn University.
